BELGIAN FIGHTING FALCON

General Dynamics F-16BM Fighting Falcon

The General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon is currently the most numerous combat aircraft operated by members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Originally developed for the United States Air Force as a day fighter, the F-16 has evolved into a highly capable multi-role combat aircraft that despite flying for the first time in 1974, is still in production. Over 4,500 F-16s have been produced over the past 52 years and most of them are still in service with over 25 nations around the world. The most recent version is called the Block 70/72 and includes a new cockpit, computers, and an advanced AESA radar based on the one installed in the F-35.

The Belgian Air Force has begun the phased retirement of its F-16s, to be replaced by the F-35A in Belgian service. The type is still being flown by 2 Wing from Florennes AB and 10 Wing at Kleine Brogel AB.

The Belgian Air Force will be celebrating their 80th anniversary at this year’s Air Tattoo and will be sending a two-seat F-16BM, for static display, adorned in special livery to mark their anniversary. The aircraft will also be taking part in our ‘Fighter Meet’ theme.
