Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II
The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II has been produced in three different base variants: a standard land-based fighter version (F-35A), a Short Take Off and Vertical Landing version (F-35B), and a carrier-based catapult and arrestor hook version (F-35C) all utilising a common internal configuration and software setup. The F-35 is capable of carrying weapons both on external wing pylons but also in an internal weapons bay, increasing its stealth capabilities. The aircraft is also fitted with an advanced 360-degree optical system that can identify missiles or stealth aircraft approaching that would otherwise go undetected.
The RNASF have ordered a total of 58 F-35As with the majority of the fleet being based at Volkel AB and Leeuwarden AB, the remaining aircraft are based at Luke AFB in Arizona for pilot training. The F-35A officially replaced the F-16AM as the Netherlands’ only fast jet combat aircraft when the latter type retired on 27th September 2024.
Last appearing on static display at RIAT23, the RNASF will be once again sending a pair of F-35s to appear at RIAT26 as part of our ‘Fighter Meet’ theme.
