Mcdonnell Douglas FA 18C Hornet

McDonnell Douglas F/A-18C Hornet

The McDonnell Douglas F-18 Hornet began life as the Northrop YF-17 Cobra which lost the US Air Force’s lightweight fighter competition to what would eventually become the ubiquitous F-16. Chosen by the US Navy, the F/A-18A Hornet entered operational service first with the US Marine Corps in 1983. In the USA, the type still serves with the US Marine Corps and is nicknamed as the ‘legacy’ Hornet distinguishing it from the larger and more advanced F/A-18E Super Hornet.

Finland originally ordered 64 Hornets (57 C and 7D) in 1992 with deliveries commencing in 1995. All single seat C models were built in Finland and replaced the Saab Draken and MiG-21 and was initially used in the air defence role only. The aircraft have since been upgraded throughout their service life and in 2012 received a substantial stand-off air to ground capability.

The Finnish Air Force Hornet solo display has been a popular performer at previous Air Tattoos and therefore we are pleased to announce that the display will be returning to RIAT26 as part of our ‘Fighter Meet’ theme.
