Lockheed CP-140M Aurora

The Lockheed CP-140 Aurora is a maritime patrol aircraft that was originally developed from the P-3 Orion. The CP-140 differs as it is fitted with the electronics suite from the carrier-operated S-3 Viking. A coastal patrol and training version known as the Arcturus was also developed however this was retired in 2011. The CP-140 was upgraded during the early 2000s to CP-140M standard which includes new software and structural improvements to lengthen the life of the aircraft.

The RCAF began operating the Aurora in 1980. Following the recent upgrade program and the retirement of the Acrturus, 18 aircraft remain in service. In addition to maritime surveillance, the Aurora is used for counter-drug and SAR missions. The Aurora was planned to be retired in 2030 however due to the delay in selecting a replacement the RCAF are considering extending the type’s service until 2040. Earlier this year, the Canadian government requested permission to acquire 16 P-8A Poseidons from the USA.

The RCAF will be sending a CP-140M Aurora to RIAT25 for static display from 405 Squadron as part of our ‘Eyes in the Skies’ theme.
