If You Were An Engineer

Inspiring the next generation of engineers

Thanks to the support of DXC, we’re proud to be a national partner of Primary Engineer’s 'If you were an engineer', an annual competition for primary and secondary school pupils.

Kate Brown 393

An annual UK-wide competition, divided in to 17 regions

Pupils aged 3-19 interview engineers and technologists to identify a problem, which they then create a solution for. The competition helps develop skills such as:

  • Engineering Habits of Mind (EHoM)
  • Problem finding
  • Creative problem solving
  • Visualising
  • Adaptation
  • Critical thinking
  • Communication skills

A panel selects regional winners from each year group

Awards ceremonies and public exhibitions in each region showcase pupils’ work. Every participant receives a certificate recognising their effort and achievement. Entries are also showcased at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) and featured in a special podcast episode.
